WGG Update

Beautiful, colorful falling leaves and chilly nights signals both the end of summer and the conclusion of the Women’s Golf Group (WGG) planned activates. Many thanks to our 63 members who enthusiastically supported and participated in the 2014 WGG-sponsored events, making this a very successful season for women’s golf at Dellwood Country Club! Here are the September highlights.

After intense and friendly season-long play, the Singles and Doubles Match Play Champions were determined this month. Heartiest congratulations to all of the winners and runners-up!

On September 16th Dellwood hosted the 2nd Annual Women’s Mercedes Championship. Although this was not an official WGG event, it is worth mentioning because there were 96 players from 11 area clubs, including 29 from DCC. This women-only, best ball event was generously sponsored by Doug Mulder, DCC member and GM of Mercedes Benz of Maplewood / Porsche of Saint Paul. The beneficiary of this tournament was the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center with 100% of the entry fee donated to this very worthy cause. The first prize was an all expenses-paid trip to Pinehurst which was won by the team of Diana Herman from Minnesota Valley and Ginger Giefer from Town and Country with a best ball score of 64. Four teams tied for second place with 65’s including our own Sue Ryan and Cathy Poechmann, who took second in a scorecard play-off. It was a beautiful day, weather-wise, the course was perfectly manicured, the Pro Shop Staff was efficient, attending to every tournament detail and the Clubhouse Staff provided really nice breakfast and lunch buffets with the usual great service. We, DCC members, were lucky and oh-so proud to receive all of the rave reviews.Thank you, Doug, for creating this event just for women golfers! And, thank you, Tim and Dennis, for continuing to host.

The 18th annual Tournament of Champions was held at Midland Hills on September 23rd. This was our 5th year of participation in this prestigious event. The Dellwood team of Maggie Batten, Wendy Benson, Paula Chesley, Kitty Considine, Judy Kishel, Kathy Poechmann, Kathy Saterback and Nancy Smith came in 6th out of 13 teams where the lowest four scores from each club was used to determine the overall team winner. Midland Hills won the team event with 283. Dellwood’s team score was 301. Next year, the TOC will be held at Oak Ridge Country Club. Thanks to Paula Chesley for, again, organizing our team!

Twenty-six members played in the Fall 9-Hole Closer which was followed by the WGG Annual Meeting and Dinner on September 30th. Winners of our second-to-last event of the season were:

9.30 PM: Scramble
1st Louisa Greenwald, Sue Ryan, Karen Sullivan 37
2nd Abby Moffitt, Kathy Saterbak 37
3rd Mickey Gahlon, Suzanne Kappel-Geib, Cathy Poechmann 38

2014 WGG President, Sue Ryan, convened our 44th Annual Meeting by thanking the 2014 Board for their great service. Awards Chair, Lisa Channon, recognized 64 Birdies made by 21 players and 38 chip-Ins made by 20 players during WGG events. We applauded and awarded trophies to our fourteen 2014 Champions and congratulated our Most Improved Player of the Year, Monica Fry, who impressively lowered her USGA Handicap from 42.8 to 30.0. Way to go, Monica! We elected the 2015 WGG Officers (President – Sue Ryan, Vice President – Karen Krebsbach, Secretary – Kirsten Zell, Treasurer – Maggie Batten) and Directors. The President’s Gavel was retained by Sue Ryan, who was elected to a second term as President. Thank you and best of luck, Sue! We so appreciate your service.

Speaking of last, this is my last (!) WGG column for the Dellwood Dialogue. It has been my pleasure to bring you this season’s WGG event results, scores, updates and information on upcoming events. I have truly appreciated all of the nice comments and positive feedback from you however, I will not miss receiving Alicia’s deadline notice! There are so many people to thank:
The chairs of all of the WGG committees for providing event info in a timely fashion,
The Pro Shop staff of Jay Norman, Nick Crawford, Clayton Johnson and Alex Hudella for promptly distributing event results and answering a million detailed questions and
Alicia Donicht, DCC Director of Membership, for her helpful patience with deadlines and lay-out advice.
